Scrubs & Beyond Search & Browse
Website Refresh

The Scrubs & Beyond marketing team needed a complete website refresh to address critical pain points in navigation, search, and filtering functionality. The Search & Browse project aimed to resolve one of the biggest issues: when customers searched for "red scrubs," they received irrelevant results like red shoes or other unrelated items. This overhaul was essential to improve both customer satisfaction and the merchandising team’s efficiency.

Project Approach

Collaborating with the VP, merchandising team, and product owner, we recognized the complexity of the task and broke it into six manageable phases for handoff to the development team. Using the Double Diamond methodology, we focused on thorough research, ideation, and implementation to ensure an optimal solution. Early research, supported by tools like UserTesting.com, helped us deeply understand customer

Key Findings
Through discovery and user feedback, we identified threemain user personas:

  1. Direct Search Users: Customers who know exactly what they want and use specific keywords.

  2. Guided Browsers: Shoppers who need help finding the right products and benefit from robust filters.

  3. New Buyers: First-time customers or those purchasing scrubs for someone else, requiring an intuitive
    homepage acting asa category guide.

Solution Highlights

  • Improved Navigation and Filtering: Redesigned filters and navigation to help users refine their search efficiently and intuitively.

  • Enhanced Search Functionality: Implemented Constructor, an advanced application that enables the merchandising team to tag trending products and customize search results dynamically. This tool became more than a search solution—it empowered the team to set offers and manage inventory visibility.

  • User-Centric Design: Created a homepage that served as both a navigation hub and a category page, guiding all user types through a seamless journey.

One of the solutions to address the needs of the "Guided Browser/Shopper," we introduced a Quick Filter designed to streamline the shopping experience. During a visit to a Scrubs & Beyond store, the Product Owner and I observed how store associates interacted with customers. Associates would warmly greet shoppers, quickly assess their needs based on product type, brand, and color, and guide them to the right items.

Inspired by this approach, we focused on these three key filtering categories—product type, brand, and color—as they proved to be the most effective in helping customers find what they were looking for.

After conducting user tests and gathering additional insights from merchandising experts, we validated this solution as an efficient way to guide customers and drive faster conversions. This thoughtful integration of in-store practices into the digital experience resulted in a user-friendly filter system tailored to the needs of both shoppers and the business. The Desktop and Mobile were very different, the desktop allowed the user to filter with a dropdown, and on the mobile version to gamify the process we added a Quick Filter Quiz that helped quickly move the customer to shopping and easily finding the product they were looking for.

Results

The redesign was transformative. The new website improved the shopping experience for customers and became a powerful tool for the merchandising team. Constructor provided the flexibility to manage filters, track trends, and execute offers, making it an integral part of their workflow. The changes were
so impactful that the team continues to use the same functionality today, proving its long-term success. This project not only solved immediate pain points but also set a new standard for how Scrubs & Beyond approaches user experience and merchandising tools.
